Evangelicals are accused of being (1) too political (too agenda-oriented: anti-gay, anti-abortion, anti-same-sex-marriage, etc.) and (2) too hypocritical (not living up to the standards we preach.) Yet research shows that people actually like Jesus today, they just do not like the church. Why?
Why do people like Jesus? Because He was inclusive,
loving, serving, encouraging, accepting, compassionate. He DID things for the benefit of
others. He was all about being "a man for others" (albeit with an "ulterior"
... Kingdom ... motive.) And, carrying on His example, first century followers
of Christ had, generally, a similarly spectacular reputation. "Not only
do they care for their own," wrote secular historians, "but they care for
ours as well."
We see that early Christians followed the lead of their
Founder. They SERVED people into the Kingdom of God. Today we are
perceived as self-centered "get-out-of-Hell-card-seekers" who don't
really care about or for our communities, or even our immediate neighbors
(except to proselytize them, they perceive.)
Imagine if that all changed and we stopped being perceived as a self-centered religious
"holy huddle" and became, instead and again, the loving, serving people of God. Well, you can
help make that happen.
